The apprenticeship programme features up-and-coming designers to create a new era where diverse perspectives are celebrated and empowered and to promote diversity in design.
The initiative brought together 10 talented designers from New York City, each specialising in their own discipline, and tasked them with creating a Serena-inspired women’s performance and lifestyle collection spanning footwear, apparel and accessories — which is now ready to unveil, Nike said in a media release.
A second year of the programme with 11 Chicago-area apprentices, is currently underway.
“With diversity as a force for creating game-changing work, this collective of dreamers and doers is creating a more equitable future for design. The Serena Williams Design Crew is a continuation of Nike’s work building teams that reflect the athletes Nike serves and puts creative power in the hands of the next generation — and will for years to come,” the company said on its website.
The first SWDC Collection, inspired by Serena, will be made available on September 1.
