Khadi share in India's textile production doubles in 5 yrs

The share of khadi fabric in India’s textile production doubled to 8.49 per cent in five years. While the mill fabric production was 2,012 million sq m and 2,486 million sq m in 2018-19 and 2014-15 respectively, khadi fabric production was 170.80 million sq m and 105.38 million sq m in the respective fiscals, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said.
KVIC chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena from 1956 to 2013-14, khadi fabric production reached 105.38 million sq m. In the last five years, India produced another 65.42 million sq m.
The number of khadi artisans has risen to 4,94,684, a news agency quoted Saxena as saying.
KVIC had also laid stress on many artisan-centric programmes since 2015 like distribution of 32,000 New Model Charkhas and 5,600 modern looms,” he added. (DS)
