British retail company Tesco has formally committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85 per cent from its own operations by 2030, and a 55 per cent and 39 per cent reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2032. The goals were part of an extensive plan for reducing emissions in line with targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Tesco has also committed to become carbon neutral by 2035 in its operations and by 2050 in its value chain, according to a press release.

The six key areas identified for emissions reduction are improve products, decarbonise transport, reduce store emissions, support sustainable consumption, eliminate waste, and protect nature. Tesco's approach includes scaling up deforestation-free feed sources, introducing low carbon fertiliser, decarbonising stores and transport networks, and continuing to build the UK’s largest network of retail EV charging points.

Some key achievements of the Tesco Group to date include adopting 100 per cent renewable electricity, a 55 per cent reduction in emissions in its operations since 2015, a fully electric home delivery fleet by 2030, and the issuing of over £1 billion in sustainability-linked bonds.

Tesco’s Planet agenda will guide its actions towards its targets, with initiatives ranging from achieving 100 per cent deforestation-free commodities by 2025 to reducing waste and protecting nature through biodiversity improvements and rewilding efforts. These measures align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 °C.
