Brazil's retail trade sales inch upwards by 0.4% YoY in Dec 2022

Regarding extended retail trade, volume of sales changed 0.4 per cent against the previous month, retreated 0.6 per cent in relation to December 2021, and accumulated -0.6 per cent in 2022. The moving average was 0.1 per cent, IBGE said in a media release.
The fall in the volume of retail trade sales, from November to December 2022, had negative rates in sectors including fabrics, apparel, and footwear (-6.1 per cent). Compared to December 2021, retail of textiles, clothing, and footwear remained in the negative field with -11.9 per cent.
In December 2022, retail trade sales for fabrics, apparel, and footwear fell by 11.9 per cent compared to December 2021—the sixth consecutive drop with -16.2 per cent in July, -5.5 per cent in August, -9.5 per cent in September, -15.0 per cent in October, and -16.4 per cent in November. The sector also exercised the second major influence in the negative field (-1.3 percentage points) on the interannual indicator (0.4 per cent).

Retail trade accumulated an increase of 1.0 per cent in 2022, the lowest result since 2016 (-6.2 per cent). Extended retail, on the other hand, accumulated a drop of 0.6 per cent, the first since 2020 (-1.4 per cent). The textiles, apparel, and footwear sector marked -0.5 per cent among other sectors that recorded losses in 2022.
