In 2021, the real (price-adjusted) turnover of retail enterprises in Germany was 0.7 per cent and the nominal (not price-adjusted) turnover was 2.9 per cent higher than in 2020, according to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Parts of shop-based retail trade, such as textiles, clothing, footwear and leather products, suffered losses in turnover in the year.

In December 2021, turnover was down by 5.5 per cent in real terms and 4.9 per cent in nominal terms (not price-adjusted) over the November figure after calendar and seasonal adjustment.

The first provisional results reported are thus within the estimated intervals, Destatis said in a press note.
