US apparel & footwear sector's retail sales at $470 bn in 2021

The US apparel and footwear industry has contributed $470 billion in retail sales of the US economy in 2021. Last year US apparel and footwear production accounted for 2.8 per cent and 1.9 per cent of the US market, respectively.

In 2021, the average American spent a record-breaking high $1,101.52 for 69.1 pieces of clothing and $310.68 for 7.4 pairs of shoes, according to a report by the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA).

The average effective tariff rate on apparel and footwear, respectively, remains 5.04 times and 4.22 times higher in 2021.

Indirect US apparel and footwear industry employment hit record highs in 2021, due in large part to the increase in demand for labour in distribution and warehousing.
