US women's apparel retailer J Jill's second quarter sales advance 72%

J Jill, a US-based omnichannel retailer and nationally recognised women’s apparel brand, delivered a 71.9 per cent sales growth to $159.2 million in the second quarter (Q2) of FY21 ended on July 31, 2021, compared to sales of $92.6 million in the same period of prior fiscal. Operating income rose to $23.5 million (Q2 FY20: loss $21.8 million).

“We are pleased with our second quarter results and the sequential topline improvement we delivered. This performance was driven by strong full price selling as our customers continue to respond to the newness and novelty, we are flowing into the assortment both online and in our stores,” Claire Spofford, president and chief executive officer of J Jill, said in a press release.
 
According to the company, its direct to consumer sales grew 11.3 per cent over 2020, representing 46.4 per cent of total sales, compared to 71.6 per cent in the second quarter of FY20, ended on August 1, 2020.
 
Gross profit doubled to $109.4 million ($55.0 million), while net loss during the three-month period widened to $24.6 million ($19.0 million). Moreover, adjusted EBITDA improved to $32.7 million (loss: $6.5 million).
 
“We enter the back-half of the year with further confidence in our ability to execute against our objectives. While we, like others in the industry, expect to experience increased headwinds from supply chain disruption, we continue to position J Jill for long term sustainable growth,” Spofford concluded.
