A patent issued to Amazon describes a robotic system that uses fluorescent inks as a guide to cut fabric. The inks are invisible under normal lighting, but when the fabric is illuminated with ultraviolet rays, sensors capture the fluorescent reflection to generate commands to cut the panels out from the textile sheet. The patent application was filed in 2016.

The reflection can also be used as assembly notations for reference by sewing workers or automated sewing systems, reports in top technology portals worldwide quoted Amazon inventor Rouzbeh Safavi Aminpour as saying in the patent application.

The cutting guides and assembly instructions can be custom-printed on the fabric to reflect the wearer’s size and fit. Other inks could be printed onto the fabric at the same time to reflect the colour pattern of choice.

Apart from fabric, the technique can be used with paper, plastic, leather and rubber materials as well, opening the way for customised clothes, footwear, scarves, gloves, hats, bags, belts, bedding, curtains, towels and other goods, according to the application. (DS)
