India’s Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) launched its National Handloom Council on the occasion of National Handloom Day last week. It will have a chapter in every state. The focus of the council will be to preserve and patent regional indigenous motifs and weaves, national vice president of WICCI Alakananda Das said.
“Through research, workshops and documentation, we will also be trying to bring all aspects of weaving into the educational curriculum,” she was quoted as saying by media reports from Guwahati.
“The various councils will develop different areas of focus and specialisation in order to mainstream women’s voices and uphold women’s interest in policy making at multiple levels and to help women get better incentives, improved access to finance and other measures that empower the ease of doing business,” she added.
