Improved Cultivation and Advanced Retting Exercise for Jute (Jute–ICare), an initiative to double the income of the jute farmers, will extend its reach. The decision was taken in a recent meeting of the textiles and agriculture ministers. Under the initiative, farmers will be encouraged to use certified jute seeds through Krishi Vikas Kendras.
Jute-ICare programme was launched in 2015. The area included under the project for 2017 is approximately 70,328 hectares covering 26 blocks in six jute growing states— an increase of 167 per cent as compared to 2016.
Under the project, regular messages will be sent to the registered jute farmers in regional languages on improved practices in jute cultivation. On an average, over 50 messages will be sent to each farmer at various intervals. Krishi Melas will also be organised in October-November 2017.
As per the agreement between National Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles with National Seeds Corporation and Jute Corporation of India, certified jute seeds of a new variety will be given to the farmers— 800 MT for 2018 and 1500 MT for 2019. (RR)
