Union Textile minister Piyush Goyal has announced the setting up of a mega handloom cluster at Olympic medalist Mirabai’s native village in Manipur and a handloom and handicraft village at Moirang in Bishnupur. The ministry of textile will set up the mega cluster at an estimated cost of ₹30 crore under the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP).

Talking about the potential of the country in textile production, the minister said that Manipur’s textile product is well-known not only in the country but also across the globe. ‘’Keeping this in mind, his ministry was working hard for the development of the sector so that it contributes to making India a superpower country,” textile minister Piyush Goyal said after the inauguration of a Thematic exhibition of crafts organised jointly by Development Commissioner (Handicraft) of Manipur government and union ministry of textiles.

In an interaction with representatives of different organisations of industry, trade and commerce in the state, the union minister said, India’s growth story is not complete without Manipur’s growth story. The centre is aware of the big challenges in this remote area in the growth of industry, trade and commerce.

“Lot of efforts have been made and special infrastructural development projects have been initiated for the promotion of industry, trade and commerce in the region including North-East Industrial Development Scheme and sanctioning of Integrated Development and Promotion of Industrial Projects,” said the union minister adding that the spirit of collaboration and competition is essential to further the growth of industry, trade and commerce in the region. He also urged the industrial bodies to undertake cooperative ventures and start-ups to promote industry and commercial trade as well as share technology and common platforms to optimise the outcome of the efforts.
