The need for
e-commerce initiatives for India’s handloom weavers and handicraft artisans and their onboarding on the GeM (Government e-Market Place) portal in large numbers was emphasised by union minister Piyush Goyal as he addressed the 8th National Handloom Day function, organised by the Indian ministry of textiles. He also stressed upon connecting the country’s weavers and artisans with more domestic and international customers.
Goyal also highlighted the need for putting the handloom census data of over 35 lakh handloom workers in the public domain for transparency and validation, so that the benefits of handloom schemes reach the genuine beneficiaries.
Five design resource centres at Indore, Kolkata, Nagpur, Meerut, and Panipat were inaugurated online, and 82 Sant Kabir and national handloom awards were given away on the occasion.

National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7 across the country in all the weaver service centres, clusters, handloom pockets, NIFT campuses, and offices of the National Handloom Development Corporation. Programmes were held to make the weavers and other stakeholders aware of government schemes, the transforming nature of the business, and increasing use of technology to promote the handloom sector to achieve greater heights.
