The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 7.77 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in the first nine months of fiscal 2017-18, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During July-March 2017-18, Pakistan earned $9.990 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to $9.270 billion in the same period of previous fiscal.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 14.12 per cent year-on-year to $1.979 billion during the nine-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 12.56 per cent to $1.918 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $55.824 million during the period under review, showing an increase of 35.76 per cent compared to exports of $41.120 million during the same months of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed increase of 4.91 per cent and fetched $987.580 million, as against exports of $941.394 million made during July-March 2016-17. Exports of cotton fabric too rose marginally by 1.05 per cent and were valued at $1.630 billion during the first three quarters of the current fiscal, while bedwear exports increased by 4.99 per cent to $1.673 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 14.49 per cent year-on-year to $396.227 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased slightly by 0.23 per cent to $487.488 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan rose 5.82 per cent year-on-year to $424.438 million during the period under review, which shows a rise in confidence among the country’s textile entrepreneurs.

In fiscal 2016-17 that ended on June 30, the value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan increased by 0.04 per cent to $12.452 billion compared to exports valued at $12.447 billion in 2015-16. (RKS)
