The Philippines wants to revive its garment and textile industry to generate jobs and to further the inclusive growth agenda of the government. It is offering incentives to firms in the sector that want to modernize operations, trade secretary Ramon Lopez said at the first Philippine Garment, Leather Goods Industries and Fabrics Expo in Pasay City recently.

Observing that the sector accounted for up to 30 per cent of employment in the manufacturing sector, Lopez said the government is inviting textile manufacturers from India and China to set up production facilities in the Philippines as there is scope to produce denim and cotton, according to a news agency report.

Aside from offering tax incentives, the department of trade and industry (DTI) is pushing for the inclusion of garments in the generalized system of preferences (GSP) and the possible free trade agreement with the United States, he added. (DS)
