United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer recently released an updated summary of the negotiating objectives for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The new objectives update the previous ones published on July 17 and this is for the first time that USTR has released a second updated version of negotiating objectives.

“If we are able to achieve these objectives, we will both modernise and rebalance NAFTA to better serve the interests of our workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses,” an USTR press release said quoting Ambassador Lighthizer.

This action follows USTR’s consultations with the Congress and private sector advisory committees throughout the renegotiation process.

The updated objectives, which reflect the goals of US proposals tabled during negotiations with Canada and Mexico, include increased market access for agriculture, new transparency and administrative measures, expanded investment and intellectual property objectives, and completed negotiations on the chapters of competition and small and medium enterprises.

The NAFTA countries have held five rounds of negotiations, with the fifth round ending on November 21. (DS)
