Vietnam came very close to achieving its 2017 textile and garment export target of $30 billion, according to the preliminary data released by the customs IT & statistics department, general department of customs, Vietnam’s ministry of finance. The country’s textile and garment exports grew 10.68 per cent year-on-year to fetch $29.631 billion during the year.
Fabric and garment exports from the Southeast Asian nation increased at 9.3 per cent year-on-year to $26.038 billion during January-December 2017. Of this, the US alone accounted for nearly half or $12.280 billion, followed by Japan and South Korea with exports to these countries valued at $3.110 billion and $2.643 billion, respectively.
Vietnam also exported 1,349,127 tons of yarn earning $3.593 billion during the twelve-month period, registering an increase of 15.6 per cent and 22.7 per cent year-on-year, respectively, according to the data. Of this, China imported around 56 per cent or $2.042 billion, followed by $121.725 million by India.

On the other hand, Vietnam imported 1,291,586 tons of cotton and 876,348 tons of yarn, valued at $2.355 billion and $1.814 billion, respectively, during the period under review. Fabric imports during the period were valued at $11.366 billion. Thus, Vietnam’s total spending on import of cotton, yarn and fabric amounted to $15.536 billion, which is more than half of the value of its exports. (RKS)
