Sri Lankan exporters urge focus on favourable FTAs

Speaking at a joint press briefing organised by the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) and other export-related chambers at Galadari Colombo, Goonetilleke highlighted the potential for export growth through strategic FTAs.
He noted that small and medium entrepreneurs are facing challenges due to lack of government support, particularly in accessing knowledge, technology, and equipment.
Goonetilleke stressed the need for mechanisms to assist these entrepreneurs effectively.
Jayantha Karunaratne, president of the National Chamber of Exporters Sri Lanka, echoed Goonetilleke’s sentiments, emphasising the urgency of effective policy making to address stagnation in merchandise exports and drive sustainable economic growth.
He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector to navigate challenges and modernise outdated laws and regulations hindering competitiveness.
Yohan Lawrence, secretary general of the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka (JAAFSL), highlighted the impact of fluctuating exchange rates and high electricity prices on international competitiveness even as Sean Van Dort, chairman of the Sri Lanka Shippers Council, emphasised the importance of digitalisation in port and airport services and brand protection in international trade.
