Problems in China affecting Indian reactive dyes sector

Fluctuating prices of raw materials, outdated government policies and problems in China’s is dye intermediate industry, on which the Indian dyestuff industry depends, are the major problems affecting the reactive dyes segment in India, said N N Mahapatra, president of Colorant, which manufactures reactive dyes for cellulosic substrate under the brand Colron.

In an interview to Fire2Fashion, Mahapatra said the Indian Government should come out with a clear-cut policy for establishing or expanding the dye intermediates industry. Initially, it should offer subsidies to such industries, he said.

India was once very strong in manufacturing dye intermediates, but later China took over. Now when China has issues, the Indian dyestuff industry is suffering as it is dependent on Chinese imports, he said.

The company plans to double production capacity and set up a dye intermediates plant at the upcoming Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) Industrial Estate in Bharuch. (DS)
