Footwear legend Sergio Rossi, known for building one of Italy's most storied luxury shoe brands, has died at the age of 84. He is perhaps the first fashion casualty of Covid-19 pandemic. He had been hospitalised few days ago. Rossi had produced the first shoes bearing his signature in 1950s, and they soon became famous for classic feminine designs.

“Today everyone at Sergio Rossi joins me in remembering our dear Sergio, the inspiring founder of our dream. Our long and glorious history started from his incredible vision and we’ll remember his creativity forever,” tweeted Riccardo Sciutto, CEO of Sergio Rossi Group.

Rossi had inspired generations of footwear designers, including his son Gianvito. During his career, he had collaborated with well-known fashion houses like Dolce & Gabbana and Versace.

One of Rossi's famous footwear models is Opanca—a simple and daring sandal that had sole curved gently around the foot, blending with the upper part of the shoe.
