The industries department in Bihar has signed an agreement with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) to offer yarn on credit to weavers for 45 days with a corpus of Rs 1 crore for this. Another Rs 2-crore corpus has been created for advance payment to weavers affiliated to the Bihar State Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Union Limited (BSHWCUL).

BSHWCUL supplies bed sheets to state health department for use in government hospitals. A cheque of Rs 50 lakh from the second corpus was handed over to the weavers' cooperative recently, according to a report in a top English-language daily.

Weavers in a state will be provided raw material on credit along with subsidy and free transport cost for the first time in the country, said state industries minister Jai Kumar Singh.

An aid of Rs 1.25 crore was also released to BSHWCUL for providing 68-inch looms to weavers for weaving double bed sheets and curtains.
The Industries department has allocated Rs1.35 crore for this scheme.

Primary weavers' societies will place orders for yarn through NHDC's e-Dhaga mobile app upon payment of only 10 per cent of the amount, after which the yarn will be delivered within 15 days without transportation charges. The weavers will repay the credit within 45 days, which will entitle them to a subsidy of 10 per cent, explained state principal secretary (industries) S Siddhartha.

Around 952 primary weavers' societies are affiliated with the BSHWCUL comprising over 56,000 weavers across the state. (DS)
