New Amazon Cambridge team focused on autonomous delivery
12 Sep 20 2 min read
Amazon recently announced a new investment to expand research and development of autonomous delivery technology in the United Kingdom with the creation of a team at its Cambridge development centre. The team will focus on Amazon Scout, the company’s fully-electric autonomous delivery service, which is in field test mode now in four US states.
Amazon Scout devices are the size of a small cooler and roll along pavements at a walking pace.
“Our investment in this new Amazon Scout team in the UK, which will consist of dozens of engineers, is driven by our partnership with the Cambridge community and made possible by the talented people who live here,” a blog post on the company’s website said.
The team being built in Cambridge will work closely with the Amazon Scout research lab in Seattle to develop on-system software to help Scout delivery devices safely and autonomously navigate around pedestrians, pets and obstacles like recycling bins and sign posts found in residential neighbourhoods.
The company is now hiring software development engineers who are at the forefront of robotics and autonomous systems technology.
Last week, Amazon announced it is creating 10,000 new permanent roles across the United Kingdom this year, taking the company’s total permanent UK workforce to more than 40,000.
