Thai Acrylic Fibre Co Ltd (TAF), a part of Aditya Birla Group, and Boonchuay Industrial (BCI) have developed woven fabrics with Amicor, the patented high-performance anti-microbial fibre, and cotton, targeted for medical and hospital use with anti-microbial performance.

Fabrics with Amicor fibre have been tested to be effective against Sars-Cov-2 virus as per ISO 18184:2019 test standards with a kill rate of 99 per cent of the viruses in just 15 seconds, the two companies said in a joint statement.

BCI has a long history of over 50 years. It started with a small dyeing house and has expanded to become one of the most well-known weaving, dyeing and finishing factories in Thailand.

Pongpiti Sripolpaew, managing director of Boonchuay Industrial, said: “We always focus on producing high quality fabrics to meet our customers’ demand, either plain fabrics or special finishing, usually with cotton and cotton blends. We are also open for innovation, and when TAF contacted us and introduced their VAPs, we could see the potential and decided to start with Amicor first, especially given the pandemic situation right now.

“Hygiene is a major factor and will soon become one of the basic standards that people are looking for. Amicor is unlike other anti-bacterial fabrics in the market. The performance is a lot last-longer with 100 washes, which is very impressive.”

Ashwini Chotani, chief marketing officer of TAF, said: “The world has been hit by the pandemic for almost 2 years now and we still have not seen when it will end. People are really paying attention on hygiene to protect themselves. We are happy that BCI decided to develop the Amicor blend fabrics as it would be useful for hospital use like doctor gowns, nurse’s uniforms, patients or even for beddings. It will be a good option in the current market.”
