Representatives from 64 countries and 1,150 companies participated in the April 14-17 International Textile Machinery (ITM) 2018 show held in Istanbul, according to Necip Guney, chairman of organising company Teknik Fuarcilik. The event attracted 58.942 visitors from 94 countries, including 14.248 foreign visitors, he said in an interview with Fibre2Fashion.

Teknik Fuarcilik organises the ITM in collaboration with Tüyap. It also organises a parallel show Hightex, a global fair for technical textiles and nonwoven technology in Turkey, in which around 130 companies participated.

The basic costs related to energy, natural gas, labour, taxes and insurance are quite high in Turkey compared to other competing countries, feels Guney. Textile machinery manufacturers are also facing exchange rate risks.

Due to a shortage of qualified staff in the textiles and textile machinery industries and failure in attempts to build cooperation between universities and businesses, the industry cannot make designs, and therefore, brands cannot be created, Guney added. (DS)
