The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), the official body of apparel exporters in India that provides invaluable assistance to Indian exporters as well as importers/international buyers who choose India as their preferred sourcing destination for garments, has begun a survey on impact of Covid-19 on the country's apparel industry.

"The survey will help us to understand the major challenges being faced by the industry and the measures needed to meet these challenges," AEPC secretary general Sanjeev Nandwani said in a statement.

In India, apparel sector is the largest employment generator after agriculture, and it employs around 13 million workers, with women constituting 65-70 per cent of them. The country's garment exports totalled $16.2 billion in FY 2018-19. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in lockdown in almost all countries, including India and major apparel importing countries like the US and Europe. The AEPC survey will result in estimating the loss caused to the industry due to the crisis.
