Amazon has more than 100 million Prime members, CEO Jeff Bezos wrote in a letter to shareholders that was shared with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The firm shipped more than five billion items through Prime globally in 2017 and more new members joined than in any previous year. Prime is a paid service offering shoppers a few distinct benefits.

Various research companies had earlier only guessed the number of paid Prime members of Amazon.

Last year was also the company’s best yet for hardware sales, showing tens of millions of Echo devices, and Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick with Alexa as best-selling products.

The letter mentioned the growth of several big segments, including Amazon Fashion. The sales numbers of the company's dozens of new private brands were, however, not disclosed.

Amazon is the fastest growing marketplace in India and the most visited site on both desktop and mobile, Bezos said, citing comScore and SimilarWeb, also noting that the Amazon was the most downloaded shopping app in India last year, according to App Annie. Prime's selection in India now includes more than 40 million local products from third-party sellers, the lettersaid.

In 2017, for the first time more than half of the units sold on Amazon worldwide were from third-party sellers, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Over three lakh US-based SMEs started selling on Amazon in 2017.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a $20-billion revenue run rate business, accelerated its already healthy growth. AWS has also accelerated its pace of innovation, especially in new areas like machine learning and artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and serverless computing.

In 2017, AWS announced more than 1,400 significant services and features, including Amazon SageMaker, which radically changes the accessibility and ease of use for everyday developers to build sophisticated machine learning models, the letter added. (DS)
