India expands paperless processing of export documents

To improve ease of conducting business and promote paperless processing, India’s revenue department will extend the facility to upload digitally-signed documents for all kinds of exports under Indian Customs EDI System (ICES), which operates at 134 customs locations handling about 98 per cent of India's international trade in terms of import and export consignments.
ICES is designed to exchange and transact customs clearance related information electronically using electronic data interchange (EDI).
The customs department had introduced paperless processing under Single Window Interface for Facilitation of Trade on pilot basis on e-SANCHIT in exports at air cargo complex, New Delhi and Chennai Customs House.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) issued a circular recently announcing this, according to a news agency report.
The Shipping Bill (Electronic Integrated Declaration) Regulation, 2011, allows authorised persons to submit digitally-signed electronic integrated declarations and supporting documents, doing away with the need for corresponding hard copies.
Once a shipping bill is filed, customs officers can access the uploaded electronic versions of supporting documents while viewing or assessing the bill on ICES, the circular said. (DS)
