Japan's clothing imports increase 4% in H1 2021

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories increased by 4 per cent year-on-year to 1,315.159 billion yen ($11.93 billion) in the first half (H1) of calendar year 2021. Of this, 92.95 per cent or 1,222.512 billion yen ($11.09 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to the provisional trade statistics released by the ministry of finance.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 697.901 billion yen ($6.33 billion), showing a rise of 3.1 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During January-June 2021, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 62.406 billion yen ($566.01 million) from the EU, up 9.4 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 4.640 billion yen ($42.08 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, showing a slight decrease of 0.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics declined by 30.4 per cent year-on-year to 484.880 billion yen ($4.40 billion) during the six-month period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 441.559 billion yen ($4.00 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 283.540 billion yen ($2.57 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 101.582 billion yen ($921.33 million).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 23.329 billion yen ($211.59 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 9.856 billion yen ($89.39 million) in H1 2021.
