Indonesian cotton imports and cotton consumption are expected to rise in the coming months due to increasing global demand for cotton textiles and clothing. The cotton imports of the country are likely to reach 2,300 million 480 lb bales, while the total consumption is expected to be 2,450 million 480 lb bales in marketing year (MY) 2021-22.

The cotton imports of Indonesia were 2,512 million 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20, which dropped by 12.42 per cent to reach 2,200 million 480 lb bales in MY 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are expected to rise again by 4.55 per cent to touch 2,300 million 480 lb bales in MY 2021-22, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

The total domestic cotton consumption was 2,500 million 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20, which declined to 2,000 million 480 lb bales in MY 2020-21. It is expected to surge by 22.50 per cent to reach 2,450 million 480 lb bales in MY 2021-22 due to recuperation of global and domestic economy and increasing vaccinations across the world.

The cotton production of the country is negligible and fulfils less than one per cent of the country’s demand. Hence, the country depends on cotton imports for all cotton-related business. The imports of the country are expected to soar owing to higher domestic and global demand as countries focus on vaccinations.
