Prada launches Re-Nylon project with new Prada bags

Prada has announced that the company has launched Re-Nylon, a new project introducing the iconic Prada bags executed in a new regenerated nylon, Econyl, produced by the textile yarn producer, Aquafil. Prada is an Italian luxury fashion house, specialising in leather handbags, travel accessories, shoes, ready-to-wear, perfumes, and other fashion accessories.
Obtained through the recycling and purification process of plastic waste collected from oceans, fishing nets, and textile fibre waste, the Econyl yarn is regenerated through a process of depolymerisation and re-polymerisation and can be recycled indefinitely, with no loss of quality, the company said in a media statement.
“I’m very excited to announce the launch of the Prada Re-Nylon collection. Our ultimate goal will be to convert all Prada virgin nylon into Re-Nylon by the end of 2021. This project highlights our continued efforts towards promoting a responsible business. This collection will allow us to make our contribution and create products without using new resources”, Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada group head of marketing and communication said.
To showcase the cutting-edge processes behind the Re-Nylon initiative, National Geographic, Prada’s storytelling partner, has produced a short video series, What We Carry. The first episode, set in Phoenix, Arizona, shows us one of the sources of Econyl nylon, together with the actress and Prada reporter, Bonnie Wright, and National Geographic explorer and creative conservationist, Asher Jay.
