Turkey's textile industry employs 1.67 mn: minister

Turkey's textile and garment industry currently employs around 1.67 million people, according to trade minister Ruhsar Pekcan, who recently told a meeting of the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association that the industry had recently witnessed a boost due to global production shifts to the country from China following the coronavirus outbreak.
Turkey exported apparel worth $17.7 billion last year. Turkish manufacturers are now looking to catch the window of opportunity created by coronavirus-hit China, which is expected to experience production delays for five-six months this year. Experts say the country’s garment exports are projected to rise by 10 per cent due to the outbreak.
The number of employed in the sector will rise as a result of new investments and rising exports, Pekcan was quoted as saying by a Turkish newspaper.
She said Turkey's advantages included a skilled workforce, competitiveness and high manufacturing, service and supply flexibility due to its geographic position.
Turkey's apparel industry aims to raise its exports to $19 billion in 2020.
The sector had a 10.1 per cent share in the country's overall exports of $14.8 billion in January 2020, reaching an export figure of $1.5 billion, up by 5.8 per cent over the figure in the same month last year. Nearly 73.4 per cent of exports were made to European Union member countries, with Germany and Spain being the main destinations.
