US textile & apparel exports stable in Jan-June '19

The exports of textile and apparel from United States were down 0.63 per cent year-on-year in the first six months of this year. The value of exports stood at $11.583 billion during January-June 2019 compared to $11.656 billion in the corresponding period last year, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel, US department of commerce.

Category-wise, apparel exports increased by 3.92 per cent year-on-year to $2.959 billion, while textile mill products dipped 2.09 per cent to $8.624 billion during the first six months of 2019.

Among apparel, the highest growth of 29.40 per cent was registered in exports of jogging and other athletic suits, whereas a maximum decline of 25.89 per cent was seen in exports of women’s and girl’s suit-type jackets & coats.

Among textile mill products, yarn exports declined by 4.68 per cent year-on-year to $2.191 billion, while fabric exports decreased by 1.66 per cent to $4.556 billion and made-up article exports decreased by 0.02 per cent to $1.876 billion.

Country-wise, Mexico and Canada together accounted for nearly half of the total US textile and clothing exports during the period under review. The US supplied $3.049 billion worth of textiles and apparel to Mexico during the six-month period, followed by $2.599 billion to Canada and $813.495 million to Honduras.

In recent years, the US textile and clothing exports have remained in the range of $22-25 billion per annum. In 2014, they stood at $24.418 billion, while the figure was $23.622 billion in 2015, $22.124 billion in 2016, $22.671 billion in 2017 and $23.467 billion in 2018. (PC)
