Pakistan's textile exports up 3.72% in July-August 2018

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased 3.72 per cent in dollar terms in July-August 2018, compared to the same months of the previous year. During the period, Pakistan earned $2.260 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to exports of $2.179 billion in July-August 2017, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 11.29 per cent year-on-year to $488.815 million during the two-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up 4.12 per cent to $435.424 million.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $3.292 million during the period under review, showing a decrease of 62.14 per cent compared to exports of $8.695 million during the same month of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed increase of 6.52 per cent and fetched $224.145 million, as against exports of $210.418 million made during July-August 2017. Exports of cotton fabric, however, declined marginally by 0.69 per cent and were valued at $346.780 million during the two-month period, while bedwear exports increased by 2.72 per cent to $394.977 million, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were down 3.82 per cent year-on-year to $92.371 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk fell by 11.79 per cent to $104.076 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan declined by 18.43 per cent year-on-year to $72.037 million during the period under review.

In fiscal 2017-18 ending June 30, textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 8.67 per cent to $13.530 billion over $12.450 billion exports in the previous fiscal. (RKS)
