Pakistan textile exports down 6.06% in July-May FY20

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan decreased by 6.06 per cent in dollar terms in first eleven months of fiscal 2019-2020, compared to the same months of 2018-2019. During the period, Pakistan earned $11.567 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to exports of $12.313 billion in July-May 2018-19, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Category-wise, knitwear exports declined by 3.62 per cent year-on-year to $2.573 billion during the eleven-month period ending May 31, 2020, while exports of non-knit readymade garments decreased 2.95 per cent to $2.367 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $17.005 million during the period under review, showing a decrease of 9.93 per cent compared to exports of $18.879 million during the same period of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports decreased by 13.12 per cent to $910.582 million, as against exports of $1.048 billion made during the first eleven months of fiscal 2018-19. Exports of cotton fabric also declined by 12.49 per cent and were valued at $1.699 billion during the first eleven months of fiscal 2019-20. Bedwear exports too decreased by 4.96 per cent to $1.984 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were down 24.29 per cent year-on-year to $401.853 million, while imports of synthetic and artificial silk yarn declined by 23.10 per cent to $475.251 million. Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan decreased by 14.22 per cent year-on-year to $406.761 million during the period under review.

In fiscal 2018-19 ending June 30, textile and garment exports from Pakistan decreased by 1.42 per cent to $13.329 billion over $13.520 billion exports in the previous fiscal.
