Production
Parallel to the developments in the construction, automotive and marine industries of Turkey, the paints and coatings industry has also developed and has become one of the most dynamic and FDI (foreign direct investment) concentrated sectors of the Turkish Industry.
Paint production has been increased around 10% annually between 1990 and 2000. Turkish paint industry production has decreased seriously due to the economic crises in 2000 and 2001. After the crises, it has experienced a rapid and steady growth with an average annual rate of 11 %.
Today the paint industry has 800,000 tons of capacity, produces over 500,000 tons of paints and coatings per year; comprises 20 big firms and about 400 small and medium scaled manufacturers, 80% of which are located in Marmara region. Seven companies of the sector are in the ISO's (Istanbul Chamber of Industry) list of Top 500 Companies in Turkey.

About 60% of production capacity of the Turkish paints and dyes industry consists of decorative paints (61% is water-based, 39% is synthetic). Apart from construction sector, paint industry provides inputs also for automotive, furniture, leather, glass, ceramic, textile and printing sectors, which are all very dynamic sectors of Turkey.

Paint industry utilizes 60% of its production capacity because of insufficient domestic demand.
The paint sector has reached world quality standards. Most of the firms have ISO 9000 certification. Dyes and paints sector adapts itself in ecological and technical standards particularly developed in European Union.

Exports
Besides meeting the domestic demand, the Turkish paint sector has the capacity to export more. In 2007 the total value of paints and coatings exports reached US$ 356 million.
Major export products of the Turkish paint and dyes industry were paints and varnishes with an export value of US$ 130 million in 2007. The second major export product were putties, resin cements and other mastics with an export value of US$ 70 million. Synthetic tanning substances (US$ 46 million), printing ink (US$ 25 million), synthetic organic colouring matter (US$ 26 million) were other important export items.
The products coded as 3201, 3202, 3203, 3204 and 3206 in armonized system are mostly textile paints and pigments, consists about 85% of the exports of textile chemicals. In 2007, total value of these materials were US$ 87 million, 24% of total export of Turkish paint industry.
The paints and coatings industry products were exported mainly to neighbouring countries and other countries who have a dynamic construction sector, such as the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Romania, Georgia, Ukraine, Iraq, China, Kazakhstan, Iran and Bulgaria.
The products of the industry are exhibited in international and national fairs organized in Turkey. Major fairs in the Turkish paints and dyes industry and those related with paints and dyes in other industries in 2008 are as follows:
