Abstract

This paper deals with Auxetic textiles that isbeen developed as a smart materials to meet the high demand in the fields oftechnical textile. These materials show a special character of getting widerwhen stretched and thinner when compressed due to Negative Poissons ratioeffect. The Negative Poissons ratio is obtained by making structural, geometrical changes in the conventional structures. Due to the special effectin the auxetic materials they have very high load bearing and fracture resistancewith high energy absorbency properties along with many special characters.

Auxetic materials are now been produced ascomposites, fabrics, foams where monofilament auxetic fibers will be availablecommercially in near future. Auxetic fabrics are warp knitted with high and lowstiffness yarns in it. These materials have wide range of applications infields like medical, soil reinforcement, aerospace, defence, automobile andmany more.

Introduction

Materials that exhibit counterintuitive propertyare known as auxetics, where the word auxetics is a Greek word auxetosthat means "that which grows". Auxetic structures exhibit anextraordinary behavior of becoming fatter when stretched and thinner whencompressed.

These emerging technology, high engineered smarttextiles are been used in various fields of technical textile due to their hightensile load bearing properties. The figure1 explains the simple formation ofauxetic textile structure.
