Philippine clears funds for Medical Textile Testing Centre

The Philippines president’s office recently approved funds for setting up the Department of Science and Technology (DoST)-Philippine Textile Research Institute Medical Textile Testing Centre. Through a memorandum signed by executive secretary in the office Salvador Medialdea, P77.8 million will be released, DoST secretary Fortunato dela Pena said last week.
The institute aims to become the centre for medical textile testing and development in the country.
The initiative supports the government’s self-reliance stance and efforts in expanding access to quality-tested textile materials for the healthcare sector and in developing innovative textile solutions to cater to the needs of the industry, according to a Philippines newspaper report.
Dela Pena said that the facility is expected to boost the country’s medical textile industry by bridging the gap of limited local testing capability, a burden to manufacturers seeking compliance with regulatory requirements.
Complete testing of medical personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks, coveralls, gowns and drapes may be offered as early as the second quarter of 2021.
The facility will also cater to other non-medical protective clothing, including face masks for community use. Its application also extends to health and hygiene products such as diapers, incontinence pads, and sanitary pads; occupational safety products such as dust masks; and pollution safety products.
