UK apparel retailer John Lewis to support UK suppliers

UK apparel retailer John Lewis has started an initiative called 'Locally Made' to enhance its support for local UK suppliers and manufacturers and will provide a dedicated area within its store for this initiative.

The first of these dedicated areas will be opened in John Lewis Leeds on October 20, which will stock over 120 products from 11 local Yorkshire suppliers, who are based within a 30 mile radius of Leeds.

The Leeds store will be followed by shops in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff, who too will increase their range of locally made products. These locally made products will also be available on its website.

The project has been begun in partnership with the Great British Exchange (GBE) which sources artisanal products from new designers, established makers, independent businesses and UK-based factories.

“GBE also provides direct support for independent suppliers, making their products available in national retailers and easily accessible for shoppers,” John Lewis said.

John Lewis own-brand furnishing fabrics, duvets and pillows are also manufactured at its own textiles mill in UK, while its own-brand mattresses are produced by Spink & Edgar, a Yorkshire based business. (AR)
