36th IIGF business generation rises over $78 mn

The India International Garment Fair (IIGF), has been able to generate business worth over 78 million dollars, compared to 32.4 million dollars last year.

The 36th edition of the IIGF had more than 340 exhibitors displaying their products compared to 244 last year.

Results of the fair has far exceeded expectations and actually been better than the fair at Hong Kong, said Mr Pritam Goel, Chairman, International Garment Fair Association.

There were more than 800 buyers and over 300 buying agents displaying Autumn/Winter 2006 ware, generating interest in sourcing Indian textiles and apparels, he added.

The important buyers included HOBO Silk and Lotus creations from United States, Max Mara and Morgane from Italy, Marcel BAUER from France, Rockford Trading Co Ltd. and Tessa Maynard from the United Kingdom.

Delegations from Australia, France, Spain, Italy, U.K, Syria, Turkey U.S.A, Hong Kong, visited the fair.

Mr Vijay Agarwal, Chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council, (AEPC), said dismantling of quotas in the EU and the US will increase Indian clothing exports to $13 billion by the end of decade against $6.2 billion today.

To achieve this it would require an investment of $2.4 billion.

The DHL McKinsey Apparel and Textile Report has projected value of global textile and apparel industry to rise to 248 billion dollars by 2008.

The report also forecasts India's potential to increase her share from 4 per cent to 6.5 per cent worth $16 billion by the year 2008.

AEPC is an apex agency which is sponsored by Ministry of Textiles for promotion of exports of readymade and apparels.
