The National Retail Federation presented its annual Ring of Excellence, Law Enforcement Retail Partnership and Retail Case of the Year awards during the NRF Loss Prevention Conference and EXPO.

The 2014 award recipients are as follows:
Law Enforcement Retail Partnership Award: Special agents with the Los Angeles office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

This award acknowledges law enforcement professionals or agencies that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support the retail industry in combating fraud and other types of losses.

The 2014 recipients were selected for their work with a local retailer in a six-month investigation of a large-scale criminal enterprise suspected of selling stolen infant formula and other perishable items. After successfully tracking the criminals, investigators indicted six individuals on 22 federal charges. Eleven federal search warrants were executed in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and San Bernardino counties. Seizures included $752,000 in U.S. currency and more than $500,000 in stolen infant formula, which was recovered from a warehouse.

In 2013, all defendants entered guilty pleas in federal court to charges of interstate transportation of stolen products and money laundering.

Loss Prevention Case of the Year Award: Barry Vaughn, area investigator, Old Navy

This award is the premier recognition program for retail LP professionals, recognizing investigators whose work has made a significant impact on their companies, communities and industry.

Vaughn is being recognized for his work uncovering a complex, multi-state scheme involving fraudulent debit card purchases worth more than $500,000. Several local, state and federal law enforcement officers from multiple agencies also played a role in the case. As a result, the individual convicted was sentenced to three years in prison.

Ring of Excellence Award: Dan Doyle, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, Beall’s Department Stores

This award recognizes pioneers in the retail LP community whose honor, integrity and character serve as an example.

Doyle, an LP veteran and industry leader, is being honored for his contributions, achievements and outstanding leadership throughout a 40-year career. In 2008, Doyle was awarded NRF’s Silver Plaque, which is given each year at NRF’s annual convention in recognition of an outstanding retailer’s contribution to the industry.
