Kenya miss the AGOA bus

At present, there are few factories in operation and level of employment has gone down to below 10,000 workers in the apparel sector. It is feared that some of the existing factories are seriously contemplating to relocate their industry to other African Countries where the investors in garment factories are encouraged and offered much incentives to setup factories in order to create jobs.

Needles to say that Kenya has failed to exploit and make use of the opportunities to create more jobs and in the mean time, to earn much needed foreign exchange from apparel exports even under the preferential treatment with the introduction of AGOA. The attributable reasons include;

• Due to lack of clear visions and goals provided by government and ministries.
• No serious commitment and keen interest from the government to develop the apparel sector in Kenya while still knowing its nature to generate many thousands of jobs and earn foreign exchange.
• Failure to make available the conducive business environment for apparel sector and build investor confidence.
