Bangla PM hopeful of US restoring GSP facility

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed optimism that the country would get GSP facilities from the US through implementing the action plan despite what she called the 'conspiracy' of a vested group, according to media reports.

She told Parliament during her question-answer session that Bangladesh is exporting readymade garments to the US without any GSP facility but is paying tax of around $850 million annually. The volume of exports from Bangladesh with GSP facility is very small in size with a benefit of only $25 million which does not make GSP very attractive for the country even though it is important for its image.

Sheikh Hasina blamed her rival and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for writing to the US government to suspend GSP facilities.

Urging American officials not to be misled by the propaganda of vested interests, the Prime Minister said the total investment from the US in Bangladesh rose to $1.2 billion during the tenure of her Awami League government from only $25 million in 1996. (SH)
