Govt tells exporters to build common brands

The government has called upon exporters in Tirupur knitwear cluster to concentrate on building common brands so as to project the collective prowess of the cluster to foreign buyers.

Addressing apparel exporters in Tirupur, Commerce Ministry Joint Secretary Ravi Capoor said Dimlah tea from Sri Lanka is an example of how a common brand could enhance the image of products from a particular region.

Capoor was interacting with exporters during an outreach programme organised by the Commerce Ministry in association with the Apparel Export Promotion Council, Federation of Indian Export Organisations and Tirupur Exporters Association, according to a newspaper report.

He said he was hopeful that duty tariff issues would not be much of an issue in another 15 years when Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) become more common. Indian garment exporters have been asking the government to expedite FTAs with the EU, Australia and Canada to boost exports.

He cautioned that FTAs are not a one-way ticket to prosperity. The entire stakeholders in the industrial development should understand both the advantages and also the trade-related issues that could crop up subsequent to the signing of FTA with a particular country or group of countries, Capoor said.
