For the fifth consecutive time, retailer Kohl's has been recognised with the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2016 Energy Star Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award.

According to a Kohl's press release, the award also recognises the company's continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements.

An EPA Energy Star member since 1998, Kohl's achieved a milestone 1,000 Energy Star-certified store locations in 2015, totaling more than 85 per cent of Kohl's stores nationwide.

“By continued collaboration with Energy Star, Kohl's is helping save money, save energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate climate change,” said Gina Mccarthy, EPA administrator.

“I'm proud to recognise Kohl's with the highest form of Energy Star recognition, as the winner of the 2016 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award,” she added.

“Kohl's demonstrates a strong commitment to energy efficiency and to preserving a healthy planet for future generations,” Mccarthy stated.

Kohl's has also set a goal through the Department of Energy Better Buildings Challenge to reduce its energy use in more than 112 million square feet of occupied building space by at least 20 per cent by 2020.

At the end of 2014, Kohl's achieved a 16 per cent reduction in energy usage from a 2008 baseline, and further reduced energy usage by an additional 3.2 per cent in 2015.

In addition to receiving Sustained Excellence Awards in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Kohl's achieved Partner of the Year Awards in 2010 and 2011.

Kohl's is a leading specialty department store with more than 1,100 stores in 49 states. (AR)
