Need to nurture CEBAI by Bangladesh garment sector stressed

The Bangladesh apparel industry must continue to nurture the Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI), launched in 2014 to address the skills gap in the sector, to provide the support needed to move up the value chain and gain further share in the world market, CEBAI president Mohammad Atiqul Islam recently said at a Dhaka workshop.

CEBAI is run by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and was supported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Sweden and leading international fashion retailer H&M until November 2017.

Although prospects in this sector are bright, the Bangladesh garments industry has enormous scope to improve productivity through skills development, an ILO press release quoted country director for Bangladesh Srinivas Reddy as saying. Reddy urged the industry to build further on CEBAI efforts to achieve a more flexible, demand-driven and inclusive skills development system in the country.

BGMEA president Siddiqur Rahman said CEBAI should also play a role in fostering research in the sector.

Achievements include the establishment of the CEBAI Training Centre in Ashulia where a variety of courses for basic sewing machine operators, supervisory and management skills are being taught. Training methods and curricula that meet industry demands have been introduced. (DS)
