Tabling of 'Save Act' applauded
Jun '11
The Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has acclaimed the tabling of 'Save Our Industries Act' bill before the US Senate, saying the bill aptly seeks to revive the Philippine garments sector.

Philippine Trade Secretary Gregory L. Domingo has termed the step as a major development to revitalise the domestic garment sector.

Since last year, Philippines has been pushing for passage of the bill, which has been supported by the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs and the country's new ambassador to the US, Jose Cuisia.

The Philippine Government has urged all its citizens with relatives in the US to update them regarding the bill, so that they can play a part in pushing for passage of the bill by writing to their congressmen and senators.

A Philippine delegation led by Congressman Manny Pacquio is expected to soon visit the US to gather more support for the bill, which provides for duty-free access of Philippine apparels in the US, if they are made using US textiles.

The passage of the bill is expected to benefit not only the Philippine garment sector, but also boost textile imports from the US, thus benefiting the US textile industry.

Currently, there is no mutually beneficial trade agreement in place between the Philippines and the US to boost their trade relationship. It is expected that the passage of the proposed bill will generate 450,000 new jobs opportunities.
