Four readymade garment units in Bangladesh's Gazipur district have been fined Tk 10.6 million by the Department of Environment (DoE).

A team headed by DoE Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury found the garment units operating with either non-working or defective effluent treatment plants (ETPs). The team found that the factories were operating without a valid environment certificate and were discharging toxic waste.

It was found that one unit was operating illegally since 2006, another since 2007, and the other two since 2008. The DoE has given three months time to these polluting units to set up ETPs.
