Chairman Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PRGMEA) Ijaz A. Khokhar has asked for support from the textile industry stakeholders in generating demand for locally produced bumper cotton crop to avoid crisis ahead.

He has urged the textile industry stakeholders including cotton growers, ginners, spinners, weaver and processors to join hands in pursuing the government for uninterrupted power supply to the value added industry. An uninterrupted power supply to the value added industry would generate demand for locally produced bumper cotton crop, ultimately averting the upcoming crisis, he asserted.

Especially, said Khokhar, the present global economic meltdown due to US and EU debt crisis is likely hit hard the prices of textile products further and there is an urgent need of joint strategy. He said he has already sent letters to textile industry stakeholders, asking for a roundtable conference on prevailing crisis like situation.

Chairman PRGMEA said the power demand of value added textile industry was about 500MW and an uninterrupted power supply to the woven garment and knitwear units would activate whole textile industry. He pointed out that the international buyers still rely heavily on Pakistani garment exports due to the quality of product and timely delivery, which is a rare combination among competitors of Pakistan garment industry.

Khokhar urged the industry stakeholders to join hands, sit together, chalk out a joint strategy and pursue the government for uninterrupted power supply to value added industry. He feared that an undue delay in timely uninterrupted power supply to the value added textile industry would not only cause trouble for cotton farmers but the industry labour would also face hardships.

Chairman PRGMEA expressed the hope that the textile industry stakeholders would support his proposal and plan out a joint strategy in the larger interest of the textile industry and national economy.
