Denim manufacturing will be revived in the coastal town of Cardigan after a gap of nearly a decade.
A new menswear brand The Hiut Denim Co has been set up by David Hieatt in the small town, which boasted of the largest denim factory in Britain until 2002.
David Hieatt had earlier founded Howies, the ethical lifestyle brand, which was sold to Timberland two years ago.
When the denim factory in the Welsh town of Cardigan closed in the early part of 2002, all the skilled workers stayed back in town. Hieatt plans to recruit these skilled workers in his company and also use their skills and experience to train new workers.
Manufacturing in the UK, particularly of mid-market items, is becoming a commercially viable option due to the rising cost of sourcing from the Far East, scarcity of labour in countries like China, and surging freight costs.
Hiut Denim is planning to launch two styles of jeans by end-October.
