The idea of flight has greatly evolved over the centuries starting with Leonardo Da Vinci's studies of manned flight to George Cayley's early gliders and culminating with the Wright Brother's first flight. Now, the art of flying takes a more well-rounded, somewhat astonishing form in the shape of a large, lacey, pink flying brassiere created by Rhonda Shear and piloted by amateur aviator Dusty Showers.
Debuting 'the world's first and largest flying bra' in Tampa on October 8th for the Red Bull Flugtag, Rhonda Shear and Dusty Showers combine powers for the 2nd Baseman Flugtag team, with Shear Enterprises, LLC as the team's sponsor.
Showers approached Shear with the idea to create a flying bra because of her famed affinity for intimate apparel and she immediately answered “it can be done!” Shear's bright pink, lace-trimmed craft reflects her efforts, active ongoing support and participation in the fight against breast cancer.
“I have been touched by the disease with immediate family and friends and thousands of my customers,” said Shear. “Dusty Showers was a perfect match for the team as the 2nd Baseman is also a newly launched charity group aiming to help women and families struggling with breast cancer.” With Rhonda Shear's husband Van Fagan at helm building the craft and Essence Flowers designing the fabric and trim, the team has worked tirelessly conceptualizing, designing and building the one of a kind airborne brassiere.
Red Bull's Flugtag challenges people to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot deck in hopes of achieving flight. Dusty Shower's mantra is “Doing Outrageous Things to Fight an Outrageous Disease,” and the team hopes to break the U.S. Red Bull Flugtag record for farthest flight-to-date of 155 feet and a flying bra may have enough uplift to do it and Shear said, “I can't wait to debut this craft to the world and win the cup for the girls!” As part of Rhonda Shear's ongoing support in the fight against breast cancer, she is also a chairperson for the 2011 American Cancer Society's 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: Put on Your Pink Bra' event in St. Petersburg, Fl and will be leading her own team 'The Rhonda Shear DivAHHs' in striding to find a cure.
