The retail sale of apparels during October 2011 witnessed a rise in Japan due to low temperatures in early part of the month, which even covered the slowdown in the later part of the month caused by a rise in temperature.
The Japan Chain Stores Association, which represents 8,042 stores that are owned by 60 firms across Japan, said apparel sales rose by 1.2 percent year-on-year to 118,120 million yen during the month.
In menswear, the sale increased by 3.8 percent y-o-y to 23,703 million yen. The sales of suits, casual trousers and slacks were good, but there were fewer buyers for coats and jackets.
During the month, the sale of womenswear grew by 1.2 percent y-o-y to 34,712 million yen, especially due to favourable sales of formal wear, sweaters and lower wear.
The sales of other apparels and accessories improved by 0.2 percent y-o-y to 59,704 million yen, mainly led by home- and school-related garments.
The increase in apparel sales in October has reversed the downward trend witnessed by Japanese chain stores for two consecutive months during August and September.
